The Indian stock market is taking an extended break after the special Diwali Muhurat trading session. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are closed today, Wednesday, October 22, on account of Diwali Balipratipada. Regular trading will resume tomorrow, Thursday, October 23.
Markets were also shut on Tuesday for Diwali. With these holidays, only two more trading breaks remain for the year Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 5 and Christmas on December 25.
The closure follows the festive Muhurat trading session held on Tuesday, which marked the beginning of the new Samvat year 2082. The one-hour special session, considered auspicious by investors, witnessed strong buying at the start, particularly in blue-chip stocks. However, profit booking towards the end trimmed early gains and pulled the indices down from their highs.
Despite the soft finish, market sentiment stayed positive as traders took part in symbolic trades to celebrate the new financial year with optimism. The Muhurat session, conducted between 1:45 pm and 2:45 pm, saw moderate trading volumes but active participation across financial, automobile, and energy sectors, setting a hopeful tone for the year ahead.
