Stock markets closed for Guru Nanak Jayanti, trading resumes tomorrow
- BSE and NSE are closed today in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti, pausing equity and derivatives trading.
- All market segments, including equities, derivatives, and currency trading, remain inactive, except for the evening commodity session which will operate as scheduled.
- The holiday follows a weak Monday session where major indices, including the Sensex and Nifty, declined due to broad-based selling across sectors.
Indian stock markets are closed today, November 5, in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) have suspended all trading activities, including equities, derivatives, SLBs, and interest rate products. Markets will reopen on Thursday, November 6.
Commodity trading will be partially affected, with the morning session shut from 9 AM to 5 PM, while the evening session will be active between 5 PM and 11:30/11:55 PM.
This holiday comes after a weak trading day on November 4, where the indices closed lower. The Sensex fell by 519.34 points, or 0.62%, ending at 83,459.15. Meanwhile, the Nifty shed 165.70 points, or 0.64%, to close at 25,597.65, slipping below the 25,600 level.
Sector-wise, only telecom and consumer durables managed to stay positive. IT, auto, metal, FMCG, and PSU stocks all saw declines of 0.5-1%. Major laggards included Power Grid, Coal India, and Bajaj Auto, while Titan, Bharti Airtel, and Bajaj Finance were among the top gainers.
Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking said the market experienced sustained selling pressure, with foreign investor flows remaining uneven and global cues staying weak. He warned that a further drop below current levels could push Nifty toward 25,400.
