Sportsmen and Their Amazing Comebacks
10. Alessandro Zanardi
Country: Italy
Sport: Italian Racing Driver and Paracyclist
Alessandro Zanardi was an Italian racing driver before his accident and now he is a para cyclist. In his career he had won 2 CART championships in North America. He was also a F1 driver. In 2001 at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz he was a part of a violent accident. In this crash he lost both his legs; one at the knee level and one above the knee. Further portions of his leg were amputated during the surgery so that his wound would heal well.
But keeping him away from the sport wasn’t possible. He returned to racing but this time around he raced with a hand cycle in 2007. His recovery and determination not to lead a life of an invalid has earned him a number of fans and respect from his fellow competitors. On 5th September 2012 at the Paralympic Games he went on to win a gold medal in the Men’s Road Time Trial H4 in London.
