Bangalore: According to the Planning Commission of India, anyone spending more than
36 a day cannot be poor in India. In an affidavit before the Supreme Court, the Planning commission said anyone with expenditure above
965 per month in urban India and
781 in rural India will not be considered poor.
According to the new criteria from the commission, people who spent
32 a day in urban areas and
26 a day in rural India are above the poverty lines. The report says the country has about 40.74 crore people under the below poverty line (BPL).
"The poverty line at June 2011 price level can be placed provisionally at
965 per capita per month in urban areas and
781 per capita per month in rural areas. At June 2011 price level, for a family of five this provisional poverty line would amount to
4,824 per month in urban areas and
3,905 per month in rural areas," says the affidavit.
