Sonowal Unveils Northeast Inland Waterway Projects Valued at Rs 254 Cr
In a significant effort to revitalize the Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector and enhance connectivity in the North Eastern Region, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, is set to unveil key projects valued at over Rs 254 crore at Pandu Port in Guwahati on February 20. The projects include the inauguration of a passenger-cum-cargo terminal at Bogibeel, established with an investment of Rs 46.60 crore, an Inland Water Transport Terminal at Sonamura, and the enhancement of terminals at Karimganj and Badarpur, as per a statement released by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.
At the occasion, he will also disclose the construction of six jetties at different points along the Brahmaputra River, amounting to 8.45 crore, the procurement of 19 passenger vessels for National Waterway-2 and National Waterway-16 totaling 25 crore, and the expansion of Jetty, Integrated Office, and Bank Protection, valued at 30 crore. The ministry emphasized that these infrastructure enhancements are poised to greatly enhance connectivity in the Northeast, facilitating more seamless transportation of both passengers and cargo.
In addition to the aforementioned inaugurations, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the IWAI Dhubri Office Complex, valued at 7.50 crore, dedicated to Immigration and Customs. This highlights the government's dedication to improving administrative procedures and infrastructure development in the region. The ceremony will be attended by Queen Oja, Member of Parliament, Guwahati, Shri Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Transport, Fisheries & Excise, Government of Assam, and the Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the area.
