Senior Indian Diplomat in U.S. Ahead Of PM Narendra Modi's Visit

WASHINGTON: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the U.S., a senior Indian diplomat has arrived here to hold talks with State Department officials.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman will meet Joint Secretary for the Americas Vikram Doraiswami and Joint Secretary for Disarmament and International Security Amandeep Gill at the State Department.
Doraiswami will also meet Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal.

Following Modi's historic win in the general elections this year, U.S. President Barack Obama called him personally and invited him for a meeting in September last week at the White House.

The call was the first high-level contact between Modi and the U.S. leadership ever since 2005 when the Gujarat chief minister had been denied a U.S. visa over the 2002 riots in the state.
