- Supreme Court hearing today on challenges to Bihar's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
- ECI assures flexibility, allowing objections beyond the September 1 deadline until nomination day.
- Nationwide rollout considered: ECI to meet state CEOs on September 10 in Delhi.
The Supreme Court will continue hearing petitions today challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, a process introduced to clean up the voter list ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
According to the apex court’s causelist, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi will take up the matter on September 8.
Earlier, the bench declined to extend the September 1 deadline set by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for filing claims and objections to the draft rolls released after the first phase of SIR. However, the ECI assured the court that any objections filed between September 1 and the last date of nominations would still be considered.

The pleas, filed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other political parties, sought additional time for voters to submit claims and corrections. In its September 1 order, the court emphasized that the process of considering claims would remain open until the nomination deadline and directed the Bihar State Legal Services Authority to deploy para-legal volunteers (PLVs) to help voters and parties file online objections or corrections.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that the ECI is weighing the possibility of conducting SIR nationwide. A meeting with all state Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) has been scheduled for September 10 in Delhi, to be attended by CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners, and other senior officials.
