San Diego Comic-Con Major Reveals: 'Tears & Cheers' at the Hall of Heroes

San Diego Comic-Con Major Reveals: 'Tears & Cheers' at the Hall of Heroes

“We live in a bubble sometimes, and you can get out of touch with your fans. You go to the studio, you come home. But coming to Comic-Con is a real opportunity to connect with the people that made your show happen and are responsible for its continued success. It's really humbling.”- Kunal Nayyar

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 has come and gone. Thousands of fans descended on "America's Finest City" this year for a four-day celebration of pop culture, movies, television, and, of course, comics. As it makes its triumphant return for the 50th time, the convention is as popular as ever. The previous convention was two years ago, and fans are looking forward to all of the announcements, trailers, exclusive footage, and merchandise. Don't forget about the cosplay either. SDCC attracts some of the best cosplayers in the galaxy.

The 2022 Comic-Con takes on added significance because it will be the convention's first annual summer gathering in years. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the convention went virtual in 2020 and 2021, with a scaled-back con taking place over Thanksgiving weekend in 2021. Comic-Con also competes with homegrown events like DC FanDome, an online event for all things DC Comics, and Tudum, a Netflix online convention for its films and TV shows. Disney, which owns Marvel, will hold D23 in September, with the Anaheim convention also featuring a look at Marvel's future. San Diego Comic-Con evolved from a niche gathering of geeks in 1970 to the flagship convention known for attracting fans and A-list celebrities to San Diego each year.

The impact to the local San Diego economy in 2022 is over $165 million in total spending, with over $90 million in direct attendee spending.

“It’s an emotional experience, but it is a pleasantly emotional one,” David Glanzer, chief communications officer and strategy officer at Comic-Con Intl., told Variety. “We can’t wait to see people face-to-face.”

Marvel Studios Final announcement: The End of Phase 4 & the Beginning of News Phase

‘THE MULTIVERSE SAGA’

In 2019, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige laid out the future of the MCU with a news-packed panel at San Diego Comic-Con that ended with the surprise reveal that Mahershala Ali was attached to a Blade movie. Little did the screaming 6,500 fans in Hall H know, that would be the last Marvel Comic-Con panel for three years. Now, the studio is ready to return, with Feige confirming Friday that Marvel will put on a Hall H panel this year, giving Comic-Con a boost as it seeks a return to normalcy in the age of COVID-19. It is a win for the convention, as Marvel does not attend every year and its panels are often among the most talked-about from the convention.

Marvel Studios did not disappoint fans in Hall H by showing off upcoming projects such as She-Hulk, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Aside from providing additional information on previously announced series and films, Marvel CCO Kevin Feige announced the next two phases following the current Phase 4.

Phase 5 begins in early 2023 with Ant-Man: Quantumania and concludes in July 2024 with Thunderbolts. Phase 6, the final phase they discussed, foreshadowed the conclusion of its newly titled Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. However, there were still plenty of open slots in Phase 6.
