Salma Beg: India's First And Only Woman Gateman
BENGALURU: Ever heard of a woman doing a man’s work? I think you might have. We are living in a modernized world, where there is no gender difference when it comes to professional work. Here is a woman who has proved it right by becoming India’s only women gateman. Wearing a hijab, she mans Malhaur station's level crossing, according to indiatimes.com.
A gateman in railways is who opens and closes the level crossing and shuts down the road where people and vehicles that pass before the trains come. Mirza Salma Beg, is a 22 year old and a humanities graduate, hailing from the city of Lucknow. There are around eleven male gatemen who excluding her work there but they say the job criteria is open for each and every one but this is the first time they had a women gateman.
The reason why Beg took up the job is because she needs a job as her mother was paralyzed and her father was unable to work anymore as a gateman as he is partially deaf. She decided to take up the responsibility on her shoulders and courageously took up the job to feed her family. However, there was a provision that a family member can replace father’s job.
Beg also took up the training for the job, although the work seemed difficult in the beginning but, she could quickly master it. Previously, she was mocked at on several occasions by her colleagues, but her indomitable spirit never let her lose hope. Beg works almost 12 hours a day and have taken up the job for the survival of her family. It is also helping her little sister continue her studies but now she doesn't mind working as a gateman for the rest of her life.
