Quality Norms Boost Indian Manufacturing and Curb Imports says Goyal
  • Quality control orders (QCOs) boost domestic manufacturing and limit substandard imports.
  • Government simplifies compliance to support MSMEs and ensure consumer protection.
  • States urged to streamline laws, ensure timely incentives, and improve ease of doing business.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that India’s quality control orders (QCOs) have helped improve the standard of locally made goods and reduced the inflow of cheap, poor-quality imports. Speaking at a meeting with state commerce and industry ministers, he said the government’s focus on quality has strengthened industries such as toys and plywood while ensuring consumers get better products at fair prices.

Goyal highlighted that QCOs ensure Indian consumers receive the same quality of goods produced for export, ending the earlier practice of dual-quality manufacturing. He cited plywood as an example, noting that several local units were saved from closure due to curbs on low-cost imports. Feedback from industries showed that enforcing higher quality standards has not raised costs for consumers, he added.

The minister also pointed to improvements in cold-rolled grain-oriented electrical steel used in transformers, saying the government is working to enhance domestic quality and reduce dependence on imports. In the paints sector, Goyal is encouraging domestic production of titanium dioxide to boost self-reliance.
