Prithika Yashini: The First Transgender Police Sub Inspector of India

BENGALURU:  Prithika Yashini becomes the first transgender sub inspector of Chennai police.

Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) has been directed by the Madras High Court to appoint Yashini who is entitled for the job.

She had applied via TNURSB but had to move to the Supreme Court since transgenders are not listed in the gender category.

Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana of Madras Nigh Court also directed TNUSRB to register transgenders as a “third category” by the next employment process.

Yashini had received High Court order for authorities to appoint her on September 7, this year.

The court bench of Chennai on the same day said, “There was absence of any column for the third gender, though this aspect now stands enunciated by the judgment of the apex court which carves out the category of a third gender for the purpose of safeguarding and enforcing properly their rights guaranteed under the constitution.”

Judges also made mention of Yashini being the “only beneficiary” of third gender category and focused on the social implication of such a decision.

Advocate General AL Somayaji shared, “We are, thus, of the view that she is entitled to be recruited to the post of sub-inspector and for declaration of her result with the hope that she would carry out the duties with dedication and commitment to advance the cause of other transgenders.”

The 25-year old Yashini belongs to Salem town of Tamil Nadu and is a young computer graduate.

Yashini said, "I'm excited. It's a new beginning for the entire transgender community."

Initiatives for upliftment of the third gender has already happened in India with West Bengal appointing a transgender school principal or  a transgender was elected mayor in a Chhattisgarh.
