Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius two-day State Visit that will enhance bilateral relations with high-level discussions and attending the national day celebrations of the island nation as the chief guest.
Welcomed by his Mauritian counterpart, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, Modi's visit will see the signing of several agreements in order to enhance cooperation in capacity building, trade, and combating cross-border financial crimes.
Before leaving, Modi was optimistic that the visit would usher in a 'new and bright' chapter in India-Mauritius relations. He will meet with the president, prime minister, top dignitaries, and political leaders during his stay and discuss areas of further cooperation.
Modi will also meet with members of the Indian community and open two important projects a civil service college and an area health centre — both sponsored under India's grant assistance.
Emphasizing the strategic value of Mauritius, Modi called the nation a close maritime neighbor, a major Indian Ocean partner, and a gateway to Africa. "We are bound by history, geography, and culture. Deep mutual trust, a shared faith in democracy, and the celebration of diversity are our strengths", he added.
An Indian military contingent, an Indian Navy warship, and the Indian Air Force's Akash Ganga skydiving unit will take part in Wednesday's national day celebrations of Mauritius.
India and Mauritius enjoy centuries-old cultural and historical ties strengthened by a robust people-to-people relationship. Close to 70% of Mauritius's 1.2 million people are of Indian origin, further strengthening this special bond.
India remains one of Mauritius' largest trading partners, with robust economic engagement spanning decades. Modi’s previous visit in 2015 marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations.
The two leaders will also address the current Chagos Islands talks. India reaffirmed its backing of Mauritius in talks with the UK to achieve a mutually acceptable solution. In a historic move last October, the UK stated it would hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, bringing an end to more than 50 years of British rule.
Modi looked forward to consolidating the long-standing relationship between the two countries for development and prosperity for their people on the basis of a common vision of growth and regional stability.
The visit highlights India's interest in pursuing stronger regional alliances and consolidating its position as a reliable development partner in the Indian Ocean basin.
