In a significant development for the education sector in Chhattisgarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai and two newly constructed Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) buildings on Tuesday. The inauguration took place via video conference from Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, IIT Bhilai accommodates 1,250 students, with plans to increase its capacity to nearly 2,500 students over the next three to four years, according to an official statement.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the IIT Bhilai campus in Bhilai, saw the presence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Durg MP Vijay Baghel, IIT Bhilai Chairman of Board of Governors K Venkatraman, and the institute's director Prof Rajiv Prakash.
Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone for the IIT Bhilai campus on June 14, 2018, with construction commencing in July 2020. The expansive campus, covering 400 acres, received an initial sanction of over Rs 1,090 crore from the Union Education Ministry. The campus features lecture halls, seminar rooms, classrooms, and other facilities, with buildings named after major rivers and mountains in Chhattisgarh.
Currently, the institute boasts a faculty of 75 teaching members and 110 other staff. The virtual inauguration also extended to newly constructed buildings for Kendriya Vidyalaya in Kawardha (Kabirdham district) and Kurud (Dhamtari district).
This initiative marks a significant stride in bolstering educational infrastructure in Chhattisgarh, providing enhanced opportunities for students and contributing to the growth of technical education in the region.
