BENGALURU-One year after possessing power PM Modi has taken up an initiative to discuss on letting foreign universities to setup campuses in India. This would be Modi’s first meeting on higher education issues with elite bureaucrats, reports ET.
Indian student’s outbound mobility recuperated in last two years. In 2014 Indian students topped by replacing China in student mobility to English speaking nations like USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zeeland. Nevertheless, China still tops in overall student outbound with more than 6, 50,000 students crossing borders and Indian figures stand at 3, 00,000.
This increasing numbers in students opting to study abroad will subsequently force them to settle down in foreign countries, which is eventually drying out the flair brains in India.
In 2013 the, then UPA government’s HDR minister had put-up, The Foreign Educational Institutions Bill, to open up India for 400 foreign universities but this was strongly opposed by BJP led opposition parties
Setting up foreign university campuses in India, can bring up India’s ranking in Global HDI (human development index) rankings. It also should attract more number of foreign students, which are now limited to south Asian students. This can eventually lead to the setting up of reputed Indian universities overseas.
