PM Modi to Launch 'Mission Mausam' for a Weather-Ready and Climate-Smart India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the 'Mission Mausam' today as part of the 150th foundation day celebrations of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The idea is to project India as 'weather-ready and climate-smart', building greater resilience to extremes of weather and climate change.
A major highlight of the event will be the release of the IMD Vision-2047 document, which will outline a roadmap for advanced weather forecasting, climate change adaptation, and mitigation strategies. The Prime Minister's Office described the document as a blueprint for leveraging cutting-edge technologies, such as high-resolution atmospheric observation systems, next-generation radars, satellites, and high-performance computing infrastructure.
'Mission Mausam' will also focus on improving the understanding of weather and climate processes and provide vital air quality data to inform long-term strategies for managing weather patterns and interventions.
The 150th anniversary celebration of the IMD will include a plethora of activities, events, and workshops that focus on departmental contributions to heightening India's climate resilience. These events shall stress the contribution of government institutes to providing true weather and climate services to mitigate human life and living resources. This is another milestone toward gearing India for climatic challenges in a time of sharp climatic variability.
