PM Modi Holds Series of Key Bilateral Talks at G7 Summit

On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a string of significant bilateral meetings with global leaders, reinforcing India’s commitment to deepening international cooperation across a wide array of sectors. His engagements included discussions with the leaders of Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, and Australia.
A key highlight of the summit was PM Modi’s meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi shared, “Insightful deliberations with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during the G7 Summit in Canada. India and Japan remain committed to further deepening bilateral ties across various sectors”. The meeting comes amidst a sombre backdrop, following the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed over 241 lives. PM Ishiba had earlier extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Japanese government and its people. “I am in deep sorrow... I express our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families”, he said in a statement dated June 13.
PM Modi also met with the new UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. Calling it an 'exceptional conversation', Modi remarked on the growing strength of India-UK ties, especially in the areas of trade and commerce. “We will keep working together to add even more momentum to this wonderful friendship”, he posted.
Another important meeting took place with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, with discussions focusing on cooperation in commerce, technology, green hydrogen, shipbuilding, and investments. PM Modi stated, “India and the Republic of Korea seek to work together in sectors like commerce, investment, technology, green hydrogen, shipbuilding and more”.
Strengthening the longstanding India-Germany relationship was also a key agenda, as PM Modi held talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Celebrating 25 years of their Strategic Partnership, both leaders discussed collaboration in IT, manufacturing, semiconductors, sustainability, research, and innovation. Modi highlighted discussions on deepening defence and security linkages, including cooperation in counter-terrorism and combatting terror financing.
PM Modi also held his first bilateral with newly elected Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, congratulating her on becoming Mexico’s first female president in two centuries. The leaders emphasized boosting cooperation in agriculture, semiconductors, healthcare, critical minerals, and enhancing people-to-people exchanges.
Adding to his busy schedule, Modi also met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The meetings underscored India’s broader push for forging meaningful partnerships with both the Global North and South.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi was formally welcomed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, marking India’s continued participation in global platforms like the G7.
The wide-ranging bilateral engagements reflect India’s proactive diplomacy and its growing role in shaping international conversations on trade, sustainability, technology, and global security. PM Modi’s presence at the G7 Summit signifies not only India’s importance as a strategic partner but also its expanding influence on the world stage.
