PLI Scheme Propels India's Electronics Exports to 3rd Spot Globally in One Fiscal: Minister
India's electronics exports have made a remarkable leap, moving from the fifth to the third position globally within a single fiscal year, driven by the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday.
Taking to social media platform X, the Minister highlighted that electronics exports touched an all-time high of Rs 3.27 lakh crore in FY25, with mobile phone exports alone contributing Rs 2 lakh crore. “Electronics exports move up from fifth position to third within one fiscal. Three years in a row, electronics is India’s fastest-growing export among the top 10 categories”, he said.
The growth of the electronics manufacturing industry has been nothing short of transformative. Over the last decade, the sector has witnessed a fivefold expansion, surpassing Rs 11 lakh crore in production value. Correspondingly, electronics exports have surged sixfold to over Rs 3.25 lakh crore. The sector has also become a significant employment generator, creating around 25 lakh jobs, with a large portion benefiting women.
A standout achievement under the PLI scheme is the rise of smartphones as India’s top export category. In a dramatic shift, smartphones have moved from the 167th position in FY14 to the number one spot within the first 10 months of FY25, underscoring India’s growing role in global electronics supply chains.
The Union Minister also pointed to a broader shift in global trade dynamics, with several hardware brands increasingly turning to India amid ongoing US-China trade tensions. This pivot is seen as a strategic advantage for India’s manufacturing ambitions.
Further strengthening the ecosystem, the government recently notified the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), a new initiative aimed at bolstering domestic value addition and component manufacturing. With a financial outlay of Rs 22,919 crore over six years, ECMS targets Rs 4.56 lakh crore in production, Rs 59,350 crore in investments, and the creation of nearly 91,600 direct jobs.
The PLI 2.0 scheme for IT hardware has also begun delivering results, generating production worth Rs 10,000 crore and 3,900 jobs within just 18 months of its launch.
