PLI Scheme Generates 26,351 Jobs in India's Telecom Manufacturing Industry
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for telecom and networking products has created 26,351 jobs in India's manufacturing industry, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said. The scheme, which was introduced on February 24, 2021, with an outlay of Rs 12,195 crore, is intended to increase domestic production and exports.
Until January 31, the beneficiaries have invested Rs 4,081 crore, with the overall sales of Rs 78,672 crore, including export sales of Rs 14,963 crore. The government has also updated the scheme guidelines to further augment domestic manufacturing, and a 1% extra incentive has been introduced for products developed, designed, and produced in India.
The amendments have further widened the approved list of products by introducing 11 new items on the basis of industry demand. The products can now be included at any point during the scheme period, and the companies have the option to submit incentive claims on a quarterly basis, which adds more flexibility.
Now, the scheme of PLI has 33 telecom and networking products included, for which companies are allowed to claim incentives. The programme is likely to drive India's telecom manufacturing self-reliance while promoting jobs and exports.
This was informed by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, in a written response in the Rajya Sabha on March 20.
