Over 99 Pct Aspirants Fail Teachers Eligibility Test

Bangalore: More than 99 percent aspiring teachers failed to clear the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) 2012. It was an alarming outcome considering the quality of training given to prospective school teachers.

The competency test was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the results were declared on December 27, 2012, as reported by Manash Pratim Gohain for TNN. The results revealed that less than 1 percent of the 7.95 lakh who appeared cleared the exam. Further, since the exam was introduced in 2011, the pass percentage has constantly been declining. Educationists have expressed the situation to be alarming and "a wakeup call for the quality of BEd degree being granted in the country."

It was noted that around 9.40 lakh aspirants registered for the test, conducted in November 2012 and about 7.96 lakh appeared for the test. But out of this number only 4,849 managed to clear either Paper I or II or both. It is seen that clearing Paper I is mandatory for those who want to teach classes I to V while Paper 2 is for those who wish to teach classes VI to VIII. For those aspiring to get certified for classes I to VIII clearing both the papers is necessary.
