Greater Noida will host ‘Semicon India 2024’ from September 11-13, featuring participation from over 250 companies across 24 countries, marking a significant milestone for India’s semiconductor industry. The event, backed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, is set to showcase the country’s burgeoning role in the semiconductor sector, spanning the entire supply chain from equipment manufacturers to fabrication units.
Akash Tripathi, CEO of the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM), emphasized that the event will serve as a crucial platform for key players in the semiconductor supply chain. "With five semiconductor projects underway in India, the need for ecosystem components is critical. ‘Semicon India 2024’ provides an ideal setting for business-to-business interactions and forging new partnerships", Tripathi remarked.
India has implemented a robust policy framework to support all segments of the semiconductor ecosystem, including packaging, display wires, OSATs, and sensors, alongside fabs. Notable projects include a major investment of nearly Rs 22,000 crore with Micron and Tata's joint venture with Taiwan’s Powerchip in Dholera. Currently, there are five proposals with a total investment nearing Rs 1.52 lakh crore.
Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, highlighted India’s unique advantages in becoming a semiconductor powerhouse. “India’s strong design capacity, large talent pool, and support from top educational institutions position the country for success in the semiconductor sector”, Manocha noted.
Additionally, the US has announced a new partnership with India to explore semiconductor supply chain opportunities. This collaboration will include a comprehensive assessment of India’s semiconductor ecosystem, regulatory framework, workforce, and infrastructure, setting the stage for potential future joint initiatives.
In a recent development, India signed a semiconductor ecosystem partnership with Singapore during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, further bolstering the country's position in the global semiconductor landscape.
