In a move reminiscent of Elon Musk’s policies, Ola Founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has directed employees across his companies to submit weekly work reports detailing their accomplishments. The initiative, titled 'Kya Chal Raha Hai?' (Hindi for 'What's going on?'), requires employees to send 3-5 bullet points of completed tasks every week.
According to an internal email, the reports must be shared with both managers and a designated company email, with no exceptions. Aggarwal emphasized the importance of direct communication and transparency, stating, "We're starting 'Kya Chal Raha Hai?' – a simple way to share your weekly updates directly with me and your managers, starting today".
The email instructed employees to submit their updates to their managers and the official 'kyachalrahahai@olagroup.in' address, which would be activated shortly after the announcement. The first report was due the day after the announcement, with future reports required every Sunday.
This decision comes amidst significant internal restructuring at Ola. The company’s electric vehicle arm, Ola Electric, is reportedly planning to lay off over 1,000 employees, its second major round of job cuts in five months, impacting departments like procurement, customer relations, and charging infrastructure.
Aggarwal’s directive mirrors a recent policy introduced by Elon Musk, who required US federal employees to submit weekly reports through his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). While Musk’s initiative aimed to enhance accountability, it drew criticism for potentially damaging employee morale.
This isn’t the first time Aggarwal has enforced strict employee policies. In December, he sent an internal memo addressing poor attendance, signaling his commitment to high performance and discipline within the organization.
As Ola navigates layoffs and a push for profitability, this new policy reflects Aggarwal’s determination to maintain operational efficiency and stay closely connected to the company’s progress, mirroring the practices of global tech leaders like Musk.
