NTT DATA plans to retrain its entire 40,000 member workforce in India to become AI-native developers, aiming to strengthen its global GenAI capabilities. Carlos Galve, Head of the Global Generative AI Office, said India remains one of the company’s most critical talent hubs.
The reskilling program will focus on improving productivity so teams can support more global projects. Kenji Motohashi, also from the Global Generative AI Office, said the goal is for the same number of employees to eventually manage two to ten times more projects with AI-led workflows.
NTT DATA, which already hosts many Indian engineers at its R&D centers in Japan and Silicon Valley, said it has no current plans to open a core R&D hub in India. However, leadership noted that the possibility may open in the future, similar to existing software development centers.
The company also highlighted India’s unique AI market needs. Cost sensitivity remains a major factor, with partners like OpenAI offering ChatGPT Enterprise at nearly 70% lower prices for Indian customers. Motohashi said this helps NTT DATA provide affordable AI services tailored to local conditions.
Data confidentiality is another priority. Some Indian clients prefer private on-premise infrastructure over shared environments to protect sensitive information. Company leaders also pointed to India’s supportive regulatory environment, contrasting it with Europe’s stricter policies.

NTT DATA plans to strengthen its support for Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India, banking on the country’s growing AI engineering talent.
Looking ahead, NTT DATA expects the next disruption beyond GenAI to come from quantum computing and photonics, pushing AI toward artificial general intelligence and advanced robotics in the next decade.
