NTPC Signs MoU to Develop Green Hydrogen Infrastructure in Odisha

State-run power giant NTPC announced that it has signed an initial agreement with GRIDCO and the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) to establish green hydrogen infrastructure in Odisha. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NTPC, GRIDCO a government of Odisha undertaking responsible for energy and CRUT, the state government’s public transit agency. This tripartite MoU is aimed to make further progress in adopting the green energy technologies of the state of Odisha; there is a particular interest in the green hydrogen mobility scheme.

Under this MoU, NTPC would establish a green hydrogen fuelling station at Bhubaneswar. Hydergine bus-based transportation for short-haul/long-haul purposes has been planned. This step will have a great impact on switching fossil fuel-powered buses for clean, green alternatives thereby contributing to the decarbonization of the public transportation sector and enhancing energy security. The transition to hydrogen-powered buses will also ensure the reduction of emissions thus supporting the state's aim at sustainable and environmentally-friendly transport solutions.

The MNRE has partially funded the establishment of this green hydrogen project in Bhubaneswar, further underlining the importance of collaborative efforts between central and state government bodies to promote renewable energy.

NTPC has already gained valuable experience in green hydrogen initiatives as it has been running a green hydrogen blending project in Surat for the last two years. The company has also implemented similar mobility projects in other locations such as Leh, Greater Noida, and Kandla in Gujarat. Besides, NTPC is actively developing a green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam, which is part of its broader goal to increase its renewable energy capacity to 60 GW by 2032.

This latest collaboration in Odisha marks an important milestone in NTPC's continued push for clean energy solutions, aligning with India's larger efforts toward a greener and more sustainable future.
