NSE's Ashish Chauhan and Zoho's Sridhar Vembu Appointed UGC Members for Three-Year Term
The University Grants Commission (UGC), a body under the Ministry of Education, has appointed prominent figures from the financial and technology sectors as members of the Commission for a three-year term.
Ashish Kumar Chauhan, the Managing Director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), joins the Commission alongside Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho Corporation. Chauhan, an alumnus of IIT Bombay and IIM Calcutta, brings extensive expertise in financial market policies. He previously served as CEO of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and has been pivotal in the NSE's growth, including its pending initial public offering (IPO) process.
Sridhar Vembu, Co-Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, a Chennai-based technology conglomerate, adds a wealth of experience in the tech industry. Zoho, with over 15,000 employees globally, encompasses various technology brands and surpassed $1 billion in sales in FY23. Vembu's contributions were recognized with the Padma Shri in 2021.
Joining them are Professor (retd) Sachidananda Mohanty, former VC of Central University of Odisha, and Professor Shashikala Gulabrao Wanjari, VC of National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), New Delhi. Their diverse backgrounds in academia will enrich the Commission's perspectives.
Chauhan's tenure at NSE has been marked by significant achievements, with the exchange reporting an 8% rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,975 crore for Q3 FY24, contributing substantially to the exchequer.
Meanwhile, Vembu's leadership at Zoho has propelled the company's growth, crossing the $1 billion sales milestone and expanding its global footprint.
The appointments reflect UGC's commitment to inclusivity and expertise across various domains, aiming to enhance the Commission's effectiveness in shaping higher education policies and fostering innovation in academia.
