Not Bangalore, Delhi The Best Place For Elderly People

BANGALORE: Gone are the days when parents were considered as “Gods” or “World of knowledge”. Now most of the children consider their parents as the mode for fulfilling their dreams. Once they acquire their dreams, parents are avoided, ignored or abandoned. Parents endure a lot to bring up their kids. Even if parents were tore-count all their sufferings in front of their children, that is like an irritation for them and they end up saying “that was your responsibility”.

Nowadays we see many 'family shows' churned out by the Indian TV industry that might make one believe that India is the country for old people. However, peeping into the real lives beyond the silver screen gives way to a clear picture. A recent survey done by the Help Age India for 2014 shows that half of the elderly population in India faces abuse of various kinds. In fact, the number of elderly who suffer abuse in the country has gone up since last year.

An NGO has conducted this study for the 10th year and released the reports before the World Elderly Abuse Day. This research was conducted in six Tier I and six Tier II cities of the country, including Nagpur, the survey aims to bring forth the reasons and incidences of abuse faced by the senior citizens. Delhi, however, ranked the lowest in elder abuse among other metro cities though it also registered a slight increase in such cases from last year.
