New Leadership Team Appointed in the US-India Business Council

A new leadership team involving Alexander Slater and Shreerupa Mitra has taken charge of the US-India Business Council (USIBC) this month.

The US Chamber of Commerce announced that a new leadership team has taken charge of the US-India Business Council (USIBC) as of January 2nd, 2023, to supervise its operations in New Delhi.

Alexander Slater, a globally recognized expert in law, economics, and business, will serve as the managing director of USIBC. Sheerupa Mitra, a veteran of policy and government, will take up the charge of deputy managing director. The current managing director of USIBC, Ambika Sharma, will now be the principal advisor to USIBC president Ambassador Atul Keshap.

Slater has served as USIBC’s deputy managing director in New Delhi since December 2019, managing the regular operations of its India-based team, and leading its financial services, tax, and real estate verticals. During his service, Slater facilitated significant gains in USIBC membership, particularly in venture capital and private equity, areas central to fueling India’s startup ecosystem and cross-sector growth.

On the other hand, Mitra has been serving as USIBC’s senior advisor in New Delhi since September 2022. With long-standing experience in the Indian government and strong connections to business leaders in the energy, defense, and advisory areas, Mitra will lead USIBC’s activities around India’s G20 presidency in 2023 and support the US Chamber’s leadership in the B20.

Slater stated that as the next managing director of USIBC, he is grateful for the opportunity to continue the organization’s 48-year mission of strengthening trade and investment relationships between India and the US. He also added that in this volatile period for geopolitics and geoeconomics, he focuses on ensuring that they provide their members and governments with the best advice on how to improve the commercial activity underpinning the bilateral relationship.

Mitra highlighted that US-India bilateral cooperation, including trade, is broad-based and multi-sectoral. Despite current geopolitical challenges significantly impacting global growth prospects, this will be a fertile situation for India and the US to enhance trade relations and iron out roadblocks. Further, she expressed that she is grateful to lead a team that the Indian government considers a critical stakeholder in this space.

The US-India Business Council is a trusted and powerful driver of every closer commercial and strategic ally between the world’s two largest democracies. Keshap mentioned that the team is ecstatic to have two policy innovators—Alexander Slater and Shreerupa Mitra—serve on USIBC’s new India leadership team. Their deep expertise and substantial global networks across the public and private sectors in the US and India will lead their organization to greater heights and serve over two hundred members better.
