Mysore Dussehra Captivates India


Bangalore: Mysore has been celebrating Dussehra for over 400 years now. This festival is of such hype in the city that Mysore plans its calendar around it. It’s a ten day festival, which is celebrated to hail the Goddess Chamundeshwari who slayed the fiend Mahishasura and so she is also called Mahishasura mardini. The festival celebrates the triumph over evil which concludes on the tenth day of Vijayadashami.

The most prominent of the Mysore Dussehra celebration is the Mysore Palace radiating with the one lakh bulbs during the night. The sight is nostalgic to most people who have attended the festival. The other highlights are the cultural dance and music performed in front of the Palace. The celebration is so grand and enormous that it attracts the maximum crowd in the country and around the world.

During the ten days of celebration the state government arranges folk dance performances, folk music, flower and doll shows and also features wrestling. The exhibition during Mysore Dussehra is there for two months and more. It was started in 1880 by the then king of Mysore Chamaraja Wodeyar, the tenth and still dominates the festival scene. Held in the Doddakere Maidan opposite the palace, it’s flooded with all kinds of utility items, souvenirs or gifts and food, also has games and other fun activities. The exhibition is eco friendly with no plastic rule.
