Muslims Have the Largest Share in Young Indian Population



BENGALURU: Recent report on the 2011 census data suggests that Indian Muslims have the highest share of children and teenage group. Where, Muslims make up 47 pct, Hindus make up 40 pct and Jains make up 29 pct of the young population, reports TOI.

The report also suggests that 41 pct of the country’s population is below 20 years old and 9 pct over 60 years. The rest of 50 pct of population is between 20-29 years. The proportion of children is decreasing to that of the elderly is increasing with a marked difference in average life span.

As per the 2001 census, the age group below 20 years made up 44 pct for Hindus, 52 pct for Muslims and 35 pct for Jains and 45 pct for the entire nation. In 2011, elderly population formed 6.4 pct in Muslims which is nearly 50 pct lower than the national average. In 2001, the share was 5.8 pct showing marginal rise. Both younger and elderly population proportions are significant as they are dependent on the able and adult population (15-59 years of age).
