More than 1.55 lakh candidates sign up for PM Internship Scheme within 24 hours

Over 1.55 lakh candidates have signed up for the newly launched PM Internship Scheme in just 24 hours, reports citing government sources said.The registration process for the Scheme kicked off on Saturday, with nearly 80,000 internship opportunities across 24 sectors available on the portal.

The Union Budget 2024 was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman with schemes aimed at benefiting around 10 million young people over the next five years. The plan promises to address youth unemployment, helping connect young people with companies that are seeking talent.

Among the major private firms that advertised internship offers on the platform include Jubilant Foodworks, Maruti Suzuki India, Larsen and Toubro, Muthoot Finance, and Reliance Industries. The companies advertising their internship are 193 in number.

Internship is available across 24 sectors and over 20 fields including operations management, production, maintenance, and sales.

Contributions to the initiative have already come from such sectors as oil, gas, energy, travel and hospitality, automotive, banking, among others.

The portal ensures efficient access to internships across sectors with Aadhaar-based registration and tools like bio-data generation.

Over 1.2 lakh internships in 737 districts across 28 States and 8 Union Territories are going to be covered in the current financial year itself through this scheme.

Top companies are also coming forward to offer positions that can fill skill gaps and help grow employment.

According to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which is managing the scheme, it is one of those transformative initiatives by the government to enhance the skills of youths that would add to their employability.

The selected youth will be given an opportunity to do an internship in the top 500 companies in India for a year along with an allowance of Rs 5,000 per month and Rs 6,000 as one time grant.

Out of that amount, Rs 500 would be contributed by the private corporations as Corporate Social Responsibility funds and the remaining Rs 4,500 would be contributed by the government.

To apply to the Scheme, applicants need to possess the achievement of high school or higher secondary school, certificate from ITI, the diploma from a Polytechnic Institute, and it is compulsory to be a graduate of BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BCA, BBA, B.Pharma, etc.
