Modi Launches Labour Reforms To Make Doing Business In India Simpler

NEW DELHI: India has implemented changes in labour laws to make it easier to do business in the country.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched several initiatives including a single window compliance process and bank-like provident fund facilities.

Modi unveiled the new inspection scheme that is expected to end the so-called inspector raj, which for companies often meant harassment by labour inspectors.

Starting Thursday, these 1,800 labour inspectors will not be able to inspect companies—a computerized system will randomly send them on inspections, based on data and objective criteria. They will have to upload their reports within 72 hours and can’t modify them thereafter.

“Let’s start with trust,” Modi said in New Delhi during the launch. He said the transparent Labour Inspection Scheme for random selection of units for inspection would end undue harassment while ensuring better compliance.
