Men rule on economic asset and women on jewellery

Bangalore: The Karnataka household survey 2010-2011 (KHAS) funded by the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore, revealed that men rule by treasuring more economic assets than women and the difference between the two is significant. The report also stated that during the time of crisis the first asset that needs to be sacrificed is the women's jewellery. Jewellery is the only asset that is owned by the female population more than the male population across Karnataka. It's not only in the rural parts of Karnataka that the male population controls more of the economic assets such as home, land and other real estate, but also in the urban areas of the state too including Bangalore. The survey also revealed that in rural areas, individual men owned three times more houses than women (65percent versus 22 percent), a finding that is not very different in urban areas including Bangalore. In terms of jewellery, individual ownership by women dominated across all areas; 46 percent in Bangalore, 66 percent in other urban areas and 69 percent in rural areas. The disproportion between men and women is not just in the case of property. Even in terms of owning agricultural land in rural areas, the gap is wide, reveals the survey.
