Local Calls Made Through Whatsapp, Viber And Skype May Soon Be Stopped



BENGALURU: As per the suggestions reported by the high level government committee headed by technocrat A.K. Bhargava, it is much likely that there could be no more free local calls through Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook and Viber, in the near future. The committee of six members endorsed net neutrality and also raised recommendations which are related to barring negligible data charges, as reported by TOI.

The new recommendation by the panel is against in concern of startups and consumers thorough Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). On the other hand international calls shall remain free along with instant messaging.

Another major suggestion raised by the committee is that zero-rating platforms to be dealt on a case-by-case basis and approval required from the telecom regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), this can attest in favor of the recognized firms against the startups. On the positive note the committee did not recommend any monitoring body for Over The Top (OTT) services which are compiled with internet applications.

The committee presented a 100-page report which states “India is the land of the Buddha, who preached the middle path,” nevertheless in its effort to follow his philosophy, the report may possibly wind up fulfilling nobody. It further states, “The committee unhesitatingly recommends that the core principles of net neutrality must be adhered to” although subsequently entitles. "Clearly, the debate on Net Neutrality is multi-dimensional and solution to this cannot therefore be unidimensional."

Other recommendation also suggests that, Innovation and infrastructure have to be taken forward by hand-in-hand as neither one can be neglected.
