Kolkata Home To Highest Number Of Smokers In India
BANGALORE: Today, everyone is well aware of the risks involved in smoking. Even with the society's increasing awareness of the health dangers of tobacco, individuals are still into smoking. It is quite surprising to know that ‘The City of Joy—Kolkata’, one of the most developed Indian cities emerges as the city with the highest number of smokers in the country.
According to the ICICI Lombard Tobacco Consumption Habits 2014 survey in association with GfK Mode 44 percent respondents in Kolkata reported an increase in their cigarette consumption in the last 2-3 years and their weekly spends on cigarettes resulted to
348.
To add on to the above stats it was also said that on an average a person in Kolkata consumed 9-10 cigarettes per day, followed by Mumbaikars with 6-7 cigarettes a day. It is also a city that recorded the highest cigarette consumption in India.
The report added, “Smoking cigarettes is perceived to be relieving stress by most of the respondents. Also Kolkata respondents smoke mostly during and post work hours.”
