Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology Achieves 1,000 Robotic Surgeries Milestone
The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, which is a centre globally recognized for cancer treatment and managed by the Karnataka government, has successfully completed 1,000 robotic surgeries - a first in the entity's history.
Kidwai is one of the first few government hospitals to embrace the advanced Da Vinci Surgical System in its procedures and has been one of the pioneers in embracing innovation in cancer treatment and precision healthcare.
Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development and Livelihood, hailed this achievement as a tribute to the commitment by Kidwai to delivering world-class care. "The hospital offers state-of-the-art cancer treatment free of cost or at affordable rates. Its adoption of cutting-edge medical technologies has ensured high-quality and timely care for patients", he said.
The robotic system, over the last nine years, has enabled 1,000 surgeries, putting Kidwai at the forefront of cancer care in India. One of the few government-run facilities that offer robotic surgery, the institute is underlined as a leader in healthcare innovation.
Under Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka scheme, Kidwai has come out as an important player who has performed the highest number of treatments among the participating hospitals. It is the only super-specialty hospital in Karnataka that has provided extensive inpatient care and houses the only bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit of the state. The unit has successfully performed allogenic as well as autologous transplants.
To support financially constrained families, Kidwai has formed a committee to reduce treatment costs and initiated cashless care for KSRTC employees.
The Da Vinci Surgical System, developed by the U.S.-based Institute for Surgical Research, is the backbone of Kidwai’s robotic surgery success. The latest version, Da Vinci Xi, features a surgeon console, a patient cart with robotic arms for precision surgeries, and a vision cart that displays real-time surgical data on LED screens.
This remarkable achievement cements Kidwai’s reputation as a leading institution for advanced cancer treatment, both nationally and globally.
