The Government Dental College and Research Institute (GDCRI) in Bengaluru is set to open a state-of-the-art digital dentistry centre, supported by the Adani Foundation. This initiative marks the first of its kind in a government hospital in Karnataka, and possibly the entire South. The centre will be formally inaugurated on Thursday, September 12, by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil.
Dignitaries attending the event include Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department Mohammed Mohsin, Institute Dean Dr. Girish B. Giraddi, and Head of the Prosthodontics Department Dr. Prema.
Dr. Anoop N, Associate Professor at GDCRI, highlighted the advantages of the new facility, saying, "We've relied on conventional methods that can be cumbersome. The introduction of digital technology with intra-oral scanners, 3D printers, and CAD/CAM will make processes error-free, precise, and much faster". The digital dentistry tools will allow for 3D printing of full dentures, surgical guides, and mock surgical models, enhancing the learning experience for students.
Dr. Anoop also pointed out the broader impact of this initiative: “In the future, the centre could assist rural areas lacking advanced labs by processing prosthetics based on scanned images sent by dentists”. This effort aligns with the government’s push toward technology adoption, providing students with hands-on experience in advanced dental techniques.
Established in 1958, GDCRI aims to enhance dental education and patient care with this new digital facility.
