  • His appointment marks the company’s first CEO in five years.

Jindal Steel Ltd, led by industrialist Naveen Jindal, has appointed Gautam Malhotra as its new Chief Executive Officer, ending a five-year gap in the top leadership role. The announcement came alongside the company’s September-quarter earnings report.

Malhotra joined Jindal Steel in May 2024 and officially assumed the CEO position on October 28, according to a regulatory filing. Since joining, he has played a key role in several operational areas, including mining, production, logistics, human resources, sales, and technology integration. He has also been involved in developing the company’s commercial and logistics strategies aimed at boosting overall efficiency.

Before joining Jindal Steel, Malhotra founded FuelBuddy, a doorstep fuel delivery startup that now operates across five countries. His entrepreneurial and operational background suggests a fresh, innovation-driven approach to Jindal Steel’s growth strategy.

Industry experts see his appointment as a strategic move to bring a new perspective to the metals and mining sector. “His leadership will be closely watched, given that he comes from outside the traditional steel industry”, said Satyadeep Jain, lead analyst for metals and mining at Ambit Capital.

Malhotra’s appointment comes at a crucial time as Jindal Steel strengthens its focus on operational excellence, digital transformation, and sustainable growth in India’s competitive steel market.
