JEE Main is an entrance exam taken to grant admission in IITs, IIITs, NITs and many other participating colleges; is given by lakhs of candidates each year. Candidates planning to take this exam next year and in future must meet the JEE Main Eligibility criteria, as set by the conducting body- National Testing Agency.

The JEE Main eligibility 2021 is based on the educational background, age limit, total attempts, and state eligibility. All the documents like Class 10th certificate, Class 12th or equivalent mark sheet, age certificate, etc. must be kept handy while starting with the registration process.

JEE Main Eligibility

Before attempting any exam, eligibility is the most critical aspect that one has to cater to. For Joint Entrance Exam as well, JEE Main Eligibility requirements are essential for aspirants to know.

  1. Educational qualification: Completion of Class 12th Board exam/Intermediate examination from a recognized school is mandatory.
  2. Age Limit: No minimum or maximum age limit is there.
  3. Year of passing 10+2 level exam: Candidates who have cleared class 12th in 2019, 2020 or will give the exam in 2021 can apply for JEE Main 2021. But the ones who cleared Class 12th/Qualifying examination in 2016 or before will not be permitted to give the JEE Main in 2021.
  4. Subjects: Candidates must have a detailed understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and have studied the same in class 12th.
  5. Total Attempts: Candidates are permitted to try their luck for three consecutive years.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria in IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc.

No one lesser than 75% marks in aggregate (class 12th) will be considered eligible, or they must fall in the top 20 percentile. Only candidates who fall into this category will be considered eligible for JEE Main if they belong to the general category.

However, 10% relaxation in minimum marks is given to the ones belonging to reserved category candidates. They can apply with 65% marks as well.

JEE Main Eligibility to get admissions to other Engineering Institutes

All the engineering colleges excluding IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs follow the same JEE Main eligibility criteria to offer seats to eligible candidates for B.E. / B. Tech courses.

However, the JEE Main Eligibility in the Indian states is based on the JEE Main rank list considering the eligibility criteria set by the states.

In addition to academic qualification, all the candidates appearing for the exam are supposed to meet other eligibility conditions.

Total attempts permitted for JEE Main?

  • Since the JEE Main is now conducted two times in a year, candidates can give the exam six times.
  • Candidates can attempt a total of six attempts for this exam in three consecutive years, including January and April attempts.

JEE Main - State wise Eligibility

While applying, candidates are supposed to check the JEE Main eligibility in the states as well:

  • State’ eligibility is the state’s code from where candidates have completed their schooling.
  • In case the candidate has passed class 12 or equivalent exam from a state but gave an improvement exam from another state, the state code from where he cleared the qualifying exam will be considered for JEE Main eligibility.
  • Candidates who gave class 12th or equivalent exam from NIOS are supposed to mention the state of eligibility based on the state where their study centre was located.
  • State eligibility of Indian nationals qualifying class 12th or equivalent exams from countries including Nepal/Bhutan will be considered based on India’s permanent address as mentioned in their passport.
  • The State code of eligibility of OCI/PIO clearing Class 12th exam will be the same as Indian nationals. But OCI/PIO who cleared the 12th standard exam from an institution abroad will be considered eligible for other state quota seats or All India quota seats. Such candidates will not be considered for Home State quota seats in all NITs, IIEST, and other participating institutes.
