In light of the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held crucial telephonic conversations with his counterparts in both countries, emphasizing India’s deep concern and urging a swift return to dialogue and diplomacy.
On Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Iran announced that EAM Jaishankar had spoken with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy stated, “External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had a phone conversation with FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this evening. EAM conveyed the deep concern of the international community at the turn of events. He urged avoidance of any escalatory steps and an early return to diplomacy”.
Jaishankar also confirmed the interaction in a separate post, noting that the conversation focused on the need for restraint and peaceful engagement.
The outreach comes amidst heightened tensions following Israel’s preemptive military strike on Iran on Friday. According to The Times of Israel, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the action and declared a state of emergency, anticipating retaliation in the form of missile and drone attacks from Iran.
"Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future", Katz was quoted as saying.
Responding to the rapidly deteriorating situation, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal issued an official statement, expressing India’s concern and outlining its stance. "We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites”, he said.

He added that India maintains close and friendly ties with both nations and is ready to extend all possible support. The MEA also confirmed that Indian missions in both countries are in touch with the local Indian community and have advised citizens to exercise caution and adhere to local security advisories.
