Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) has sealed a strategic partnership with InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (IndiGo), India's largest airline, aimed at enhancing travel options and flexibility between Malaysia and India. The agreement, designed to provide customers with increased choices and seamless travel experiences between Malaysia and India, will see Malaysia Airlines acting as the marketing carrier on IndiGo-operated flights, thus bolstering its connectivity within India. Concurrently, patrons of IndiGo will gain access to a broader range of destinations across Southeast Asia through its network expansion.
"This reciprocal arrangement will enable both carriers to offer seamless connections to their customers, in addition to enjoying integrated travel itineraries and other amenities", stated Malaysia Airlines Bhd. MAB becomes IndiGo's first codeshare partner in Southeast Asia, while IndiGo becomes MAB’s inaugural codeshare partner in India.
Currently, Malaysia Airlines operates 71 weekly flights to nine destinations in India, including major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. "With India constituting our largest international market, we are thrilled to establish this MOU with IndiGo to further extend our reach beyond the nine hubs we currently serve in India", remarked Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd, the parent company of MAB.
In a reciprocal sentiment, Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, emphasized that the collaboration would enhance international trade prospects by improving accessibility. IndiGo, boasting a fleet exceeding 350 aircraft, revealed in its annual report that it achieved a record milestone by transporting 86 million passengers during the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2023 (FY2023).
In the fiscal year ending on December 31, 2023 (FY2023), Malaysia Airlines Bhd reported a substantial operating profit of RM1.099 billion, surging over thirteenfold from its FY2022 figure of RM80 million. This remarkable growth was attributed to increased capacity and robust passenger demand, with MAB having restored 86% of its pre-pandemic capacity by December 2023, and a full recovery anticipated by the second quarter of 2024.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) achieved an annual net profit for the first time since 2014, posting earnings of RM766 million in 2023, a significant turnaround from the RM344 million net loss reported in 2022. The positive results were credited to strong traffic in the premium segment, proactive capacity management, and improved yield within the group's passenger segment., encompasses a codeshare agreement and mutual cooperation, according to Malaysia's national carrier.
