India-UK partnership will further strengthen with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar starting a visit to Britain, with the emphasis on strengthening a GBP 41 billion bilateral trade relationship between the two countries. The visit's major highlight is the new Indian consulates to be opened in Belfast and Manchester, with the aim of better regional economic engagement and increased investment opportunities.
At the same time, the UK receives more than GBP 100 million of new Indian investments, which will create new jobs, drive economic growth, and enhance financial opportunities for people. Prior to the consulates' opening, Dr. Jaishankar called on Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House to promote the UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The talks addressed important areas including economic growth, technological advancement, and coping with global challenges such as climate change. They also addressed urgent geopolitical concerns, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the current situation in the Middle East.
Foreign Secretary Lammy underscored the strategic significance of India, declaring, "Dr Jaishankar and I are taking our GBP 41 billion trade plan forward, following renewed trade talks in Delhi. Establishing new Indian consulates in Belfast and Manchester deepens our countries' relationships beyond London, boosting growth equally across the UK. This diplomatic depth will further enhance our trading ties and support the Indian community here".
Also, the discussions brought back the Technology Security Initiative, which is a partnership first started when Lammy visited Delhi in July 2024. The partnership focuses on deepening cooperation in the advanced fields of Artificial Intelligence, telecommunications, and critical minerals. These measures are set to drive innovations in medicine, strengthen supply chains, attract more investments, and provide new job opportunities.
The intensified cooperation between India and the UK underscores a common vision of creating a future on the basis of innovation, collective prosperity, and robust global strategies. With enhanced diplomatic ties and a fresh push for technology and trade, the two countries are setting the stage for a more integrated and vibrant bilateral relationship.
