Indians More Racially Targeted Than Other Asians
Bangalore: Indians are currently the center of racist attacks in Australia than in the past when people from East Asian descent were the chief targets, a major social survey has revealed. Attacks on Indians have spiraled in Australia in the last few years with nearly 100 such cases being reported in 2009 as against 17 incidents of attacks in 2008.
The Indian community is now most frequently singled out rather than people of East Asian descent as it used to be in the past. Researchers found that this is in spite of official attempts in recent years to calm anger over a wave of attacks on Indian students, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The survey revealed that only 12.2 percent Australians had "very positive" feelings towards the Indian immigrants in 2012, while 4.7 percent had very "negative feelings" towards them. The survey further said Sydney is home to a higher percentage of people born overseas than Melbourne, but they are usually poorer and concentrated in fewer suburbs than those in the southern state.
It was seen that last year only 3.8 percent people had recorded for being "very negative" about the Indian community.
