President Biden has nominated Mrs. Nisha Desai Biswal, an Indian-American public official and businesswoman, as a part of his top ministry team.                               

President Biden has nominated another Indian-American, Nisha Desai Biswal, to his administration, strengthening the top team.  Mrs. Biswal was undoubtedly one of the primary constituents of former President Obama’s administration. She served as a deputy CEO of the United States International Development Finance Corporation and has made significant contributions. 

Stepped up for consideration by the US Senate, Mrs. Bsiwal’s nomination, once cleared, will become a part of Biden’s cabinet. She holds nearly 30 years of experience in leading the US foreign policy and international development programs within the White House, US Congress, and the private sector. She is currently serving as a senior vice president for the international strategy and global initiatives at the US Chamber of Commerce and has expertise in handling US-India diplomatic relations. She is handling the US-India and US-Bangladesh business councils.

Mrs. Biswal served as assistant secretary for south and Asian affairs at the US Department of State for nearly four years, overseeing the US-India strategic partnership–during unprecedented cooperation–including the launch of an annual US-India strategic and commercial dialogue. She also was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2017, a top honor of the Indian Government granted to Global Indians.

During her tenure as the assistant secretary, Mrs. Biswal initiated the C5+1 dialogue with Central Asia and the US-Bangladesh partnership dialogue. She has also worked as the assistant administrator for Asia at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), directing and supervising the agency’s programs and operations across South Central and South East Asia.

Mrs. Biswal’s work achievements extend to serving as a staff director on the state and foreign operations sub-committee on appropriations, in addition to serving as a professional staff on the foreign affairs committee in the US House of Representatives. She is a chairperson of the advisory committee on voluntary foreign aid and is a current board member of the National Democratic Institute and the US Institute of Peace international advisory council. She also serves as a member of the United States Institute of Peace Afghanistan study group and the Aspen Institute’s India-US Track 2 dialogue on climate and energy. The popular businesswoman and public official graduated from the University of Virginia in international relations and economics.
