India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, met with Republican Senator Mike Rounds in Washington to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in technology, innovation, and trade. Ambassador Kwatra called the meeting 'productive', highlighting discussions on artificial intelligence and increased energy imports from the US.

During the meeting, Kwatra updated Senator Rounds on India’s rising purchases of American crude oil and liquefied natural gas. Energy has become a central pillar of the India-US relationship, with both sides working to enhance long-term collaboration.

Senator Rounds, who represents South Dakota, is a key figure in US policy on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. As the Chair of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and co-chair of the Senate AI Caucus, he plays an active role in strengthening America’s leadership in emerging technologies.

Recently, he has attended several Diwali celebrations in Washington, including at the White House and the World Bank, where he emphasized India’s growing role in global innovation and trade.

At one event, President Donald Trump lit a traditional diya to mark Diwali, extending 'warmest wishes to the people of India'. Kwatra thanked the President and noted the importance of cultural ties, especially for the 5 million-strong Indian diaspora in the US.
