- 3nm Chip Design Launch: India’s first 3nm chip design centres opened in Noida and Bengaluru by Renesas Electronics.
- Ecosystem & Talent Boost: Includes training kits and EDA tools for 270+ institutions to build industry-ready talent.
- Global Ties & Support: Renesas backs 250+ academies/startups, emphasizing Indo-Japan collaboration in semiconductors.
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw opened India's first 3-nanometre (3nm) chip design facilities in Noida and Bengaluru, a major milestone in the country's drive for high-end semiconductor innovation. These have been established by Renesas Electronics India Private Limited and have the potential to position India in an elite list of countries working at the edge of chip technology.
Vaishnaw said, “Designing at 3nm is truly next-generation. We’ve done 7nm and 5nm earlier, but this marks a new frontier”. He added that the launch reaffirms India’s growing presence in the global semiconductor space and reflects increasing industry confidence, witnessed at global platforms such as the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The new centres are also part of a wider government strategy to create a healthy semiconductor ecosystem, covering design, fabrication, ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging), and provision of related equipment, chemicals, and gases. The government has also been working towards developing a skilled talent pool to address the increasing demand in the semiconductor sector.
Vaishnaw also launched a new semiconductor training kit aimed at enhancing hands-on hardware skills among engineering students. More than 270 educational institutions, already provided with access to sophisticated EDA (Electronic Design Automation) software tools under the India Semiconductor Mission, will also be provided with these hands-on kits. "This combination of software and hardware learning will make engineers industry-ready.". We are not only creating infrastructure but investing in long-term talent building", he said, appreciating efforts of CDAC and the ISM team for their efficient operationalization.
Renesas Electronics Managing Director and CEO Hidetoshi Shibata, attending the event, called India a strategic cornerstone for the company. He mentioned that Renesas is building on its end-to-end semiconductor strengths in India, from architecture to testing, while actively engaged in supporting more than 250 academies and a variety of startups through government-initiated programs like the India Semiconductor Mission and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. He also emphasized Indo-Japan partnership in reshaping the global semiconductor lifecycle.
