India Tops With Largest Diaspora Population across Globe: Survey



BENGALURU: A UN study shows that India had the largest diaspora population across the globe with 15.6million living outside the country, in 2015.  Prior to India, it was Russia that had the largest diaspora, whose migrants limited to some particular regions like Israel, reports Indiatimes.

In 2000, both India and Russia had equal number of diaspora equating to 10.8million from each country.

Top ten migrating destinations for Indians presently includes U.S., Saudi Arabia, Germany, Russia, UAE, UK, France, Canada, Spain and Australia.

U.S. is now home for 20 lakh Indians, which only allows highly qualified professional Indians to reside.

UAE, topped as most preferred aboard destination among Indians due to maximum job opportunities it offers. 

The present count of Indians in Australia is 4lakhs. Even Bermuda has around 500 Indians living there.

The migration of India witnessed this widespread boost after the country’s economy transformed into a high growth. India’s diaspora last dropped to the lowest of 3percent in 2005 and since then, the percentage is only shooting. In 2010, the number increased to 13.3 million which made an increase in 26percent diaspora.

As per the UN report, between 2010 and 2015, the percent of migration in the country rose to 17.5percent.

The same report shows as 4.8 million women migrating out of the country in 2010. The same number shoots to 5.5 million in 2015.

G Parthasarathi, a former diplomat said, "Indian migrants to the US have been a great asset for the world. Their contribution to development of information technology has been useful to various sections. Similarly in Gulf countries, many Indians are in the managerial cadre and their contribution has been immensely appreciated." 

Parthasarathi adds, "Indian labourers are highly disciplined and they are ready to jobs which Europeans or people from developed countries may find it tough to do."

In the Gulf region, Indians are mostly working as construction employees.

Migration and Remittances Factbook 2016 of the World Bank comments, "Migrants from South Asia totalled 37.1 million, of whom 20.6 per cent were living in Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and nearly 43 per cent were in high-income non-OECD countries (such as the GCC). The largest source countries of migrants were India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nepal. The region hosted 12.4 million migrants, the majority of whom were from within the region. "
