India, the US, and Japan Uniting for Cooperation in 5G and Telecom

India, the US, and Japan are all set to nurture mutual growth in the 5G and telecom space in their region via established cooperation.

Indian telecom minister Ashwani Vaishnaw, Japan’s Digital Minister-Kono Taro, and the US Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo are likely to hold a meeting on filming up greater cooperation on 5G, telecom stacks, in addition to enabling tech. The discussions aim at nurturing partnerships with traditional allies focusing on emerging technologies, a key among India’s current rollout of 5G.

Mr. Taro reached New Delhi and is currently preparing for Prime Minister Fumio Krishida’s visit in the upcoming week, and taking in policy inputs for the G7 Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting, which will be hosted by Japan in April. The agenda also considers strengthening industry cooperation between companies in the private sector, with Japan, expressing its interest in participating in India’s move to deploy indigenous telecom stacks.

The Center of Development of Telematics (C-DOT) framed under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is developing a full stack of refined telecom equipment on an indigenous note via a fully indigenous non-standalone (NSA) 5G core. Similarly, it is creating the first-ever indigenously built standalone (SA) 5G core in India, a critical technological improvement on the NSA core. The first domestically developed 5G radio and antennas are likely to become effective for use in the future, alongside the 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) and C-DOT officials.

Mr. Vaishnaw and Mr. Taro’s meeting highly focuses on accelerating the cooperation between India and Japan, to fast-track cooperation on a range of telecom areas like 5G technologies and telecom security. It also focuses on submarine optical fiber cable to the Andaman islands of India, for an effective spectrum management and high-altitude platform for broadband in unconnected areas.

The decision to step up mutual cooperation in varied sectors has pre-existed for quite a long time but was often intimidated by the pandemic and geopolitical distractions, hindering achieving bilateral relationships. Wherein, the meeting planned is likely aiming to set up focus groups in these specified arenas.

A meeting conducted priorly with Mrs. Raimondo, analyzed the possible ways in enhancing the US- India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET). As a result, officials stated that US organizations featuring 5G-enabled technology areas like Verizon are aiming for keen and established testing in the Indian market.

Thus, telecom companies in India are highly underlining the industrial use cases for 5G across healthcare, manufacturing, and communication via robotics and automation, owing to their capability to rise as the biggest sources of revenue in the future.
