India Ranks 3rd in Global Scientific Publications, Indicates US Report
A report released by America’s National Science Foundation stated that India ranks third in global scientific publications.
Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh revealed that India had moved from 7th to 3rd in global scientific publications and scholarly output based on a report by America’s National Science Foundation. Further, he added that India’s scholarly output increased from 60,555 papers in 2010 to 1,49,213 papers in 2020.
India ranks third globally in the number of PhDs produced annually. In a similar upward trend, the number of patents granted by the India Patent Office to Indian scientists has massively increased within the last four years.
Minister Singh appreciated the government’s reforms for this success. He stated that the government had helped by successively increasing allocations for scientific departments, incentivizing investment by the private sector to elevate their share in GERD. It also improved the ease of doing business in science, technology, and innovation (STI) activities, introducing flexible tools for public procurement, and creating avenues for collaborative STI funding through portfolio-based funding mechanisms such as public-private partnerships and other innovative hybrid funding mechanisms.
Another major reform is the treatment of research and development by the government as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending. Corporates can invest in technology business incubators or contribute to research efforts done by institutions and national research laboratories as part of their CSRIn addition, there are specific investment incentives provided such as Location-based tax incentives enabling 100 per cent profit deductions generated from establishing and doing business in northeastern Indian states.
The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022, released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), saw India’s innovation ranking move from 81st in 2014 to 40th in 2022.
