India Pilots AI Powered Payments on ChatGPT Using UPI
  • NPCI, Razorpay, and OpenAI launch pilot for AI driven payments via ChatGPT.
  • Users can make purchases through ChatGPT powered by UPI, starting with Bigbasket.
  • The trial aims to explore secure, autonomous transactions with banking partners.

India has taken a significant step toward the future of digital payments by launching a pilot program for AI powered transactions via ChatGPT. The initiative is a collaboration between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), fintech firm Razorpay, and OpenAI, supported by Microsoft.

The pilot uses India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to allow users to complete purchases directly through ChatGPT. The goal is to explore how conversational AI can autonomously perform transactions securely while giving users control over their payments.

Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are the banking partners for this trial, while Bigbasket, a Tata Group owned e-commerce platform, is among the first merchants to allow direct purchases through ChatGPT. Customers can soon shop for groceries seamlessly using AI chat without leaving the conversation.

Oliver Jay, Managing Director of International Strategy at OpenAI, said, “Combining advanced AI with UPI, one of the world’s most trusted real time payment networks, opens up a new era of effortless and secure commerce”.

UPI already processes over 20 billion transactions per month, highlighting its scale and reliability. The pilot will assess the potential for scaling AI driven payments across various sectors, marking a major step in integrating conversational AI into India’s digital payment ecosystem.

If successful, the program could transform how consumers interact with online shopping and payments, making transactions faster, simpler, and more intuitive.
