India Likely To Sign Pact with Westinghouse to Build 6 Reactors

BENGALURU: In a major step to expand the power generation capacity in the country the government is likely clear off the deal of $150 billion with Westinghouse Electric Co LLC. With a target of producing 63,000 megawatts (MW) by 2032, the government is planning to set up six nuclear reactors with respective company, as reported by the ET.

If everything goes as per the plan, the Gujarat will house a power plant and the country will be equipped with 60 reactors, which is said to the world's second-biggest nuclear energy market after China.

However, the expected move is cited as a move to slice off greenhouse gas emissions and to shun the perilous effects of environmental changes.

Westinghouse Deal:

According to the report, the officials of Westinghouse and Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) have gone through many rounds of negotiations on the nuclear plant in Mithi Virdi.

However, NPCIL has declined to speak about the latest development on the bilaterally talks. Central Minister for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh reported parliament this month about the negotiations held with American and the French companies but did not provide such pertaining details.

Initially, the plan was to build two reactors at a time, but according to the latest news the Westinghouse Electric Co LLC is much likely to build 6 reactors. Further, the construction of the infrastructure will take off from later in 2016 and the reactor is said have the capacity of producing 1,100 MW. However in order to build up trust with the Westinghouse the NPCIL is planning to setup an insurance charge of 15 billion Indian rupees.
