In a bold move to boost domestic energy production, India is set to explore over 2.5 lakh square kilometers of offshore areas under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) Round X, announced Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri .
“We are ready for a new era in energy. In oil and gas exploration, there are no longer obstacles, only possibilities”, the minister posted on X, signaling the government’s strong intent to transform the sector.
Puri, currently attending the Offshore Energy Cluster meeting in Bergen, Norway, emphasized that the recent decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to open previously restricted 'no-go' areas is a game-changer. “This step not only strengthens India’s energy security but also positions the country for a major shift in global energy leadership”, he said.
In a key bilateral discussion in Oslo, the minister also met Kristian Sorensen, CEO of BW-LPG, the world’s leading LPG shipping firm. The company currently manages 20 percent of India’s LPG imports. Talks centered on enhancing collaboration between BW-LPG and Indian energy companies to ensure a more robust and secure supply chain.
OALP Round X has already attracted interest from both global and domestic energy players, with expectations high for record-breaking participation and investment levels. It is poised to be one of the largest exploration rounds globally.
In preparation for the bidding process, the Ministry of Petroleum has invited feedback on the Draft Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, Model Revenue Sharing Contract (MRSC), and Petroleum Lease, with the deadline set for July 17, 2025.
Puri is also scheduled to address industry stakeholders at Urja Varta 2025 at Bharat Mandapam on July 17, further outlining India’s roadmap to energy self-reliance and global collaboration in the oil and gas sector.
